Google Adsense is one of the most widely used income generating program on the web. Most of the blogs and websites survive on income from Google adsense. As long as Google keeps its adsense model running, we’ll see a lot of adsense related blogs and websites online.
But not all blogs or websites make money with adsense, there is a science and method to increasing adsense revenues by tweaking adsense units and ads. A slight change to your adsense units can result in anywhere between 10 % to 25 % increase in your CTRs (click through rates), thus resulting an increase in adsense revenues.
Here are a few Adsense tips that will help you increase your CTRs with a slight modification in Adsense unit colours :
1) Design your website to highlight adsense:
Every website is different in terms of design and theme, as a website or blog owner you need to ensure that the colours of the adsense units blend into the design and theme of your site or blog. You need to ensure that the look of your page ensures attention of your ads.
Many websites have strong graphic elements that catch the eye – usually at the expense of the Adsense units. If you are using adsense units, be judicious in the selection of the fonts, font size, colours, images, ad tables and other visual aspects of your website. Try to draw subtle attention to your adsense units, make them the star of your website or blog.
2) Make the border go :
– By opting to remove the border of the adsense units, you will increase the CTR of the ads by more than double the existing click rate. Removing the border makes teh ad look less like an ad and more like content. Remember the more your adsense unit looks like an ad the less chances of your reader clicking on it. That’s the reason text based ad do better than image ads on adsense.
3 ) Use Three way matching :
– You’ ll need to tweak your adsense units on your website and blog to test for the optimum size and optimum ad units that increase your adsense revenues. The three way matching uses a combination of titles, text and background to make the ads more effective for clicks. Too make different ad sizes and units will only clutter your webpages and confuse your visitors. Try to make your ads not look like ads, ensure that the ad units blend into the content and design on your website or blog.
4 ) Blue is the best colour :
– To ensure have optimum clicks for your ads, you need to ensure that the ad are the same colour as the text on the rest of your page and the background matching the background colour of your web page or blog.
But what about the actual colour of the URL link for the ad, the line that the user is actually going to click ? What colour should that be ? The link should be blue in colour, the online users have come to believe that the links on the webpages are blue in colour and people are more likely to click on a blue link than a link in any other colour.
The line in your adsense code that sets the colour of your link is the one that says :
Google_colour_link = “#colour”;
“#colour” is the hexadecimal number for the colour you want to use. You should make sure that the number is #0000FF
Keep your links blue and you can experience an increase in click through rates of as high as 25 %.
5 ) Matching the URL display colour :
– You can change the colour of the adsense Title to attact the users attention, but according to Google’s adsense policy you still have to display the URL of the ads, but you dont have to display it in a way that people can see it. Adsense experiments have show that the user is less interested to click on the URL’s ,if thats the case then as an adsense publisher your income from adsense will not be high. One legitimate trick to make the click through link less obtrusive is to change the URL display colour to match the text description on your site or blog. Now the link will blend in with the text and the eye will be drawn in on the hyperlink instead of the URL.
Note that the 728 x 90 leaderboard and the 468 x 60 banner do not display the URL line by Google’s design. You will not get in trouble by not displaying the URL for these ad units, its just the way it is.
The above points will help you improve your adsense income, if you have downloaded Joel Comm’s Adsense Secrets then there is no reason you can’t increase your adsense income each month. The trick is to experiment with different ad units on your website or blog and using the most optimised ad sizes that give you results.
I don’t use adsense on this blog, but I have a number of adsense related websites that make a decent income each month. The points above have been successfully tested on various adsense units on different websites.

There’s a really fine line between blending your ads and deceiving your visitors.
Mahalo is a great example of blending ads gone too far.
You are right, the idea is not to deceive your readers but to ensure that the adsense ads are best optimised for higher clicks. Google will ban your account if it finds that you are deceiving your user or using black hat tricks to increase your adsense clicks.

Thats a good question and great observation about my blog 🙂 these are tips that have worked for my adsense sites. My alexa ranking has been steady between 82 K and 85 K for a while, but that depends on the traffic on my site. I am not sure if Alexa is the correct tool to measure a blogs success. I believe engagement and interactivity is the correct measure of a blogs success…Any thoughts ?

I think the majority of Internet browsers DON’T know what adsense is. Sure, you and I do because we make webpages, post on DP, know about online marketing, etc.
But the average person browsing the Internet does NOT know what adsense ads are. If they’re blended well enough, they often click on them not realizing they’re advertising. And, oftentimes, the ad links take them where they want to go anyway.
And, yes, curiosity and boredom play a part too….

You are right, someone who knows about adsense will not click on the ads unless the ad relates to the products or service the reader is looking for, thats why sites and blogs targetted to webmasters and bloggers dont make a lot of money from adsense. Where as sites and blogs targetted to the masses on a particular niche work well with adsense.

Yes, the above adsense tips will increase your CTR if you work closely and monitor the adsense units and sizes for your website or blog. There is no black hat method here , the adsense tips are legitimate and have worked to show an increase in CTR and adsense revenue. There is nothing that violates the Google adsense policy on the above post.
Google changed the option of clicking only on the titles and urls to avoid accidental clicks by users, this has been done to protect the advertisers interest as an adsense publisher is a loss of revenue. Which means that you have to ensure that your adsense units and sizes on your website or blog are optimised for high CTR and revenue

I know this is off topic to the adsense post but I really like what you did with your sidebar – ie. adding the “recommended books, hosting, domain” it adds a classy touch to a very well placed sidebar.
On the Adsense post I found the most useful thing is to just try each of the different formats every where and anywhere on the page… Basically record data once a month for different ad styles and colors.. Once you have found your best spots/styles change the borders and colors.

You can use templates to build your site, but what will get people to your site is the content. Valuable and unique content will get users to your website, once you have decent traffic you can try to experiment with your adsense units.
If you are serious about your web business I would recommend you to have your own hosting and domain and not to host it on any free hosting or free site.

The good thing with Adsense is that it is not solely based on your traffic. You can have little traffic but if you have good paying keywords and highly responsive audience, then you can still earn good money..
I like the fact you actualy told people the truth blue links work best. Everyone knows blue is a link not text so they do get more click thrus. Some people say blend color and that makes no sense people will not know they can click the link sometimes.
It drives me absolutely nuts when I see poorly blended adsense ads. I realize this can be tricky if you have a patterned background but for a solid background it should blend perfectly. I use the color picker in GIMP (any photoshop type program will work) to get the exact hex code for my sites so the ads blend seamlessly. It takes 2 minutes to do properly and makes a world of difference.
I think I have applied all of the tips mentioned above but haven’t seen any dramatic change in my CTR. It was on avg 1% before and still remains the same. Not sure what is missing in my case.

I really appreciate your tips on Google Adsense . I have incorporated these tips into my blogs and I have seen a dramatic increase in CTR and my earnings over the last several months.
The first tip seem sto be most important I think. I’ve tried several different blog themes for AdSense. In these themes I placed the AdSense in the same location which is within the content area (at the end of my blog post, Adsense will show). Simple and clean theme seems to be working well than a professional-designed theme with interactive images.
I would recommenced, you to analysis expected revenue from adsense, and you create your own search marketing budget and drive customers to your website.
Some great tips here! It’s especially important to make sure your site highlights where your adsense is going to go, otherwise it may get lost in navigation or not seen at all.

Just a tip for those who have BLACK background like my websites. My adsense units’ link color is YELLOW and the text and url are both white. The content’s text is also white and links are also yellow.
