<p>Right? Yes and no. <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/aweber"target_blank">E-mail marketing</a> no longer reaches your audience the way it used to. People used to sit at their Gateway desktops every night, dial into their Netscape and check e-mails while watching Family Matters. </p>
<p>The story is now a bit different. One in five marketing e-mails is opened on a smart phone. This changes a few things for your e-mail marketing campaign. Though you may have to modify a bit, you can and should make it work in your favor.</p>

<p>Whatever the cause, we are in a period of change in the business of email marketing. This brings with it risk of course but also tremendous opportunity. It is up to you which way the balance goes with regards to your company.</p>
<p>A recent Google sponsored report has statistically calculated what has occurred over the last three years in <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/aweber-automate-email-marketing-newsletters-for-your-web-business/"target_bank"> email marketing</a>. Whilst history is interesting what you want to know is what the future trends are so that you can target your investment, especially if the rumours of tough times ahead are true.</p>
<p>The amount of email traffic generated by UK companies reached record levels by the end of 2009. This put paid to any suggestion of social networking sites taking primacy and it is reassuring that 20% of firms canvassed have funded their increase in email marketing via a reduction in their <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/social-media-investment/"target_bank"> social media budget </a></p>
<p>There would appear to be little doubt that the increase in emails has a lot to do with the set-up costs of email marketing. The level of investment necessary is remarkably low compared to just about any other form and the return is the class leader. Further, on-costs only increase in line with the size of email lists so any necessary investment in infrastructure should be able to be funded by revenue. Companies can come on board with very little outlay and about the same level of risk.</p>
<p>You will probably think that there has to be an end to all this good news. You are right of course. The law of diminishing returns is not guidance. As more and more companies come into email marketing something has to suffer. <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/defeating-clickers-remorse/"target_bank"> Click</a> rates have reached a two year low.</p>
<p>This is not to say that overall clickthroughs have suffered. Of course they have not. It is predicted that the internet economy is likely to grow by 10% year on year for the next five years. However, if you wish to get the best value from your email lists it would seem that you need to ensure that your emails go at the right time to the right customers with the right offers.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/capturing-the-right-leads-for-email-marketing/"target_bank"> Email lists</a>, and the data they generate, must be used to full effect. It is essential that your emails are targeted to increase clickthroughs. The more successful companies will use advanced email marketing tactics. Information returned from email marketing software allows targeting on sectors such as behavioural, lifecycle and triggering.</p>
<p>The trick with email marketing is that any investment is self financing. A small percentage increase in clickthroughs will be enough to cover costs and with sophisticated email marketing comes significantly better returns.</p>
<p>The report suggests that a little more that half the companies canvassed will increase their email marketing budget over the next year. Many are funding this through cancellation of other, less responsive marketing, such as direct mail.</p>
<p>There will be lots of opportunity in the months to come for companies with well managed email marketing procedures to increase their marketing returns and their market share as well.</p>

<p>I always use the example of regular newsletters when dishing out email marketing tips.  I think most of us think of email marketing campaigns mainly in terms of sending out monthly or weekly mailers to our subscribers.  It’s a pity – there’s so much more you could do with your <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/6-reasons-every-business-should-use-email-marketing/"target_blank"> email campaigns</a></p>
<p>We all know the importance of customer touch points in our business – things like efficient customer service and service with a smile.  We like nothing more than seeing business go the distance when they’re dealing with us; whether it’s a waiter cracking a joke at the table or a telephone operator putting us through to the right person to speak to first time.</p>
<p>It’s the same with email marketing: Subscribers appreciate us going the distance to cater to their needs.</p>
<p>I’m not saying you should <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/4-proven-email-subject-lines/"target_blank"> email </a> your subscribers daily, just that there are more options where it might be okay to contact them.  Adding a few more email touch points to your repertoire not only fosters a healthier customer relationship, but also drives sales (and let’s not lie, that’s what we’re here for!).</p>
<p><strong>Welcome them to the fold</strong></p>
<p>Get off on the right foot.  A new subscriber, customer or potential customer should be treated with care!  Very few email marketers send out welcome messages to new subscribers.  Yet research shows that the point at which someone decides to <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/aweber/"target_blank"> sign up</a> for your newsletter is a point of heightened engagement – you should cash in before they lose interest!  Welcome emails have some of the highest open rates.  And, aside from all the CRM (customer relationship management) benefits, there’s the matter of ISPs.  Some ISPs now look at recipient engagement to measure how much priority your email should get in the inbox.  Sending a welcome email can help you get your future emails to the top of the inbox.</p>
<p><strong>What is a welcome email?</strong> </p>
<p>It can be as simple as “Thanks for signing up”.  However, there are a few more options.  You can give them instructions or a website tour, send an email to explain the benefits they’ll get for following you online, tell them more about other ways to stay in touch (like your <a href="http://www.facebook.com/webtrafficroi/"target_blank"> Facebook page</a>) or even send them a quick questionnaire to find out more about them, i.e. what particular products/events they’d like to receive emails about, whether there’s a particular branch or store they’d like to know more about, etc.</p>
<p>Make sure that you nurture the relationship from the get go – it’s the best way to achieve continued sales.</p>
<p><strong>Reward good behaviour</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>A customer’s first purchase is a momentous occasion!  Not only have you just made a sale, but you’ve potentially roped in a lifelong customer.  Use the opportunity to send a thank-you email – and if you really want to incentivise future sales, you can offer them a small <a href="http://www.thesisdiscounts.com/"target_blank"> discount </a> on their next purchase.</p>
<p>Once they make those future purchases, don’t flood them with too many emails, i.e. don’t send a thank-you and discount email after every purchase.  The novelty of being on your email list has probably waned a bit by then!  If you do want to create an after-sale touch point, rather send them relevant emails with information or products related to their purchase.  </p>
<p>For instance, after purchasing an iPod, I find it interesting to receive and email containing related products that might interest me, such as iPod covers and strap-on exercise iPod holders, or even docks and speakers.</p>
<p>Of course, you can also intersperse your newsletters with some other emails, such as conducting customer surveys or getting direct <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/how-to-get-more-testimonials-from-your-customers/"target_blank"> feedback </a> or reviews from customers, which is also a great way to take stock of your customer satisfaction.</p>
<p><strong>Wave them a fond farewell</strong></p>

<p>Okay, so this one is a bit controversial.  Some email marketers advocate sending an email to a subscriber when they unsubscribe, and others are thoroughly against the idea.</p>
<p>Generally, subscribers tend to be inactive (that is, they stop opening your emails) for quite some time before they unsubscribe.  They simply delete it as it arrives in the inbox.  Personally I find it’s part of my fear of missing out, I always delay unsubscribing because I’m afraid that I might miss out on something interesting! After not opening a newsletter for a few months I finally realize that I probably never will, and unsubscribe.  </p>
<p>It’s a good idea to contact your subscribers during such a period of inactivity.  A simple request to update their subscription details should be good enough.  It reminds them that you’re still there, and interested in actively <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/how-to-get-users-to-engage-with-you-on-social-media-sites/"target_blank"> engaging</a> with them.</p>
<p><strong>Unsubscribes happen, </strong>however; I don’t think a polite “Thank you for your readership, sad to see you go” email is too much – as long as you don’t put your readers through a lengthy unsubscribe process as well.</p>

<p>A similar logic is in hand when it comes to email marketing. It is not about how many you sell to, but the right customer that matters. In other words, you can make more profits out of a 100 member database if they are truly targeted than you can from a 1000 member generic database. </p>

But there is a logical flaw here – people who provide their details to the database are those who are going crazy for a freebie offer. Can they make rightful targets if you are selling a product later on? </p>

It stands for “Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003.”)</p>
<p>The process of white listing encourages all subscribers to do this and helps prevent “false positives” in which legitimate, permission-based e-mails are filtered. This helps you remain clean as a web business owner.</p>
<p>The CAN-SPAM Act affects some aspects of your email marketing business, especially if you intend to <a href="http://www.webtrafficroi.com/go/EmailMarketing/" target="_blank"> send an email newsletter </a> or send emails about &#8220;deals&#8221; to your list. You need an effective email marketing system that maintains your email marketing list by complying to The CAM-SPAM rules.</p>
