Owning a blog is a great feeling when you can use the blog to help the underprivileged. The web has been used very effectively as a medium to connect charities and missionary with the rest of the world. Social media sites like Twitter and Facebook have only helped such causes to go viral and bridge the gap very effectively and smoothly.

I am happy that I have been able use the blog and my communities on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to support a few charity organizations.

I would really appreciate if you can help me and spare a minute to caste your vote on Facebook

The Chase Bank in association with Facebook is holding a contest for charities on Facebook. They will be giving away US$1 million to the charity which secures the most number of votes from Facebookers.

Give Foundation – a charity organization in India that I support, is one of these charities. If they win, they plan to use this prize money to educate 40,000 underprivileged children in India through their partner NGOs.

All partner NGOs have undergone due diligence, and are highly transparent and credible organizations. They are located across India and provide access to education to underprivileged children, including the girl child, tribal children and children from remote rural areas.

You must have also seen my tweets supporting GiveIndia on Twitter, I request you to spare a minute to vote for them. Your vote will help educate one poor child get an education.

More the awareness, more the votes and the chances of winning the prize, to help me support the cause I would appreciate a tweet for this post. All you need to do is click on the green tweet button at the bottom of this post and support the cause. You can also follow GiveIndia on Twitter

Cast your vote for Give India, help educate a child..

Facebook crosses 300 million active users

by ZK on September 20, 2009

Facebook

Facebook recently announced that it crossed 300 million monthly active users across the globe and as you know thats roughly the population of US. Facebook added about 50 million users in 75 days, that’s about 670,000 users per day. In mid july it announced that it had reached 250 million users. Facebook has also turned cash positive as of last quater.

In the recent Facebook blog post, CEO Mark Zuckerberg says that they hoped to be cash positive sometime next year but were happy to have made enough to cover their operating expenses starting last quarter.

Almost a year ago many were speculating if Facebook will ever turn cash positive, the recent blog post says Facebook is now “free cash flow positive” - the term “free cash flow” means the amount of cash that a company generates after budgeting costs required to maintain and expand itself.

Facebook’s global audience has doubled since the beginning of the year, adding 150 million new users since January. More than 70% of Facebook’s users reside outside of US and as of today the company reports 85 million active American users.

Facebook’s board members say that it would do $500 million in revenues in 2009, up from an estimated $280 – $300 million in 2008.

Tagging has become one of the most essential and popular “to do’s” in the Web 2.0 environment. It’s almost impossible to use Twitter without tagging your followers or other Twitter users. Tagging also helps you increase your followers on Twitter and helps your tweets go viral. By using hastags effectively on Twitter you can to share your thoughts with your Twitter followers.

Tagging is also one of the most popular features on Facebook that gives you the ability to identify and reference friends in photos, videos and notes. Today Facebook introduced tagging in the status update feature. You can tag your friends and other Facebook profiles in your status update.

Now your Facebook status would look like a Twitter status update.

“Coffee with @ZK @Starbucks”
“Just Tweeted a Web Marketing post by @WebTrafficROI”

Facebook adds tags to status

This is a great way to let your social network know what you are doing and talking about.

Facebook status tagging works in a similar way like the Twitter tagging ( Facebook recently announced a direct integration with Twitter ) when you write a status update on Facebook and want to add a friend’s name to something you are posting, just include the “@” symbol.

As you type the name of what you would like to reference, a drop down menu will appear that allows you to choose from your list of friends and other connections, including groups, events, applications and pages. You will soon be able to tag friends from applications and pages. The “@” symbol will not appear in your published status or post after you’ve added your tags.

Friends and references you tag in your Facebook status will be sent a notification and a wall post linking them to your post. Your friends have an option to remove tags from your post. Facebook hopes that you can share your thoughts with your network in a more meaningful and engaging manner.

With social networking and Web 2.0 sites modeling on tag based applications, is social tagging becomeing a silent movement ?

What the F**K is Social Media ?

by ZK on September 1, 2009

If you ask brand managers and internet marketing, managers about social media, chances are that they will tell you one of the two things :

- Its useless and does not help in selling my brand or product
- We are in the process of building a Social Media Strategy

Whenever I hear or read the above lines, I interpret that most internet marketers, just don’t get social media and the value it can bring to the brand or product.

Now, if you are struggle to explain social media to your clients or to your boss, just flip the presentation “What the F**k is Social Media” by Martha Kagan. The stats cited in the presentation make it well worth the read, after reading the entire presentation if your client or boss is still unclear about “What is Social Media” and “Why they should be using it” then even God can’t help them.

Facebook-Twitter

Facebook is in the process of releasing a new feature for Facebook Pages, this feature will allow you to automatically post updates to Twitter simultaneously. The feature presently is only for Pages and not for individual profiles.

Facebook fan pages are a success with public figures and businesses, if you have created Facebook pages you want to share a status update, or a photo with your fans and community. Celebrities like to share personal news with their Facebook fans and Twitter followers all at the same time.

If you manage a Facebook page you will now be able to decide whether to share updates with your Twitter followers, you ll also be able to control what type of update you wish to share : status, photos, links, events or all of them. You will also have the option to link multiple pages to different Twitter accounts.

facebook twitter application

With this integration, its very clear that social media marketing is gone main stream and social media sites are ready to blend with each other to give the user an integrated platform

The new feature can be found at Facebook.com/Twitter
