Twitter is undoubtedly one of the biggest social media platforms out there today. Even with all the Google + hype and the new Facebook developments, Twitter is still unrivaled as a true number one social media contender with its unique, 140 character interface and effortless functionality.

As Twitter continues to become a staple in the social media ranks it is of little wonder that Internet marketers are so focused on dominating it. So, how do you dominate your niche on Twitter? Well the answers simple, you just have to make your strategy rather ‘wonky’…

These users are of no connection to me. As you can see by the ‘Stop’ signs it tells me that I’m not Following them and they aren’t Following me. In fact I would never have heard of these individuals were it not for this search.

What this search means is that not only can I now Follow them, but I can see that an @ or ReTweet from one of these individuals could get my account and my content out there to thousands of Twitter users. These users are potentially Tweeters that I’ve never came into contact with before or may never do without this search.

You can now start to generate more Twitter Followers from building relationships with influential thought leaders all thanks to this tool. You can perhaps begin to do business with these users, gain guest blogging opportunities and maybe even form a strong friendship with them. All the while you’re status can be begin to improve through these relationships to help put you on a similar social level as those influential characters.

This particular data could help you find out who the influential audiences are behind those key niche figures. Hogwash! Not you! Here’s why – and how to do it.

4. Your followers increase because they want everyone to know they made it to the big time – a syndicated newspaper – with your newspaper. So they tweet and tweet and retweet and just like firework explosions, the followers come in.

It’s a beautiful design and you don’t need to lift a finger after the set up is done. Remember that you’re doing all this without knowing a stitch about editing, writing, layout and design, and magazine or newspaper distribution. Phenomenal!

Strategy 2. Guest Blogging, Anyone? Yes, Me! Me! Me!

That’s what you should be saying. You’ll step right up to the plate.

Just as there’s an easy way to create a syndicated newspaper, there’s also an easy way to do guest blogging . Simply create little useful tips for people in your niche.

Or here’s one easier than that – comment on the comments on the blog!

Now remember this – in the bio at the end of the article, what will you write? Something simple like “Follow me on Twitter at _______ and get ________.”

This is a great way to learn how to increase Twitter followers .

Strategy 3. Equate Thank You’s with Twitter Followers!

With this one, simply change a few blank lines of code on the thank you page of your site (for opt-ins, newsletters, white papers, and special reports) to say something like this:

“You’re invited! Please follow me on Twitter!

Here’s why:

2.
3.

Start right now! See you soon!”

I’ve had an addicting fascination to twitter for a long time; particularly starting when CNN would scroll tweets live across the bottom of the TV leading up to the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. During the time since signing up I have used the service to find content, people of interest, promote content and drive traffic to websites. Here are five tips to drive more traffic to your site from twitter that have worked for me; before we get started you must have your website URL listed in your bio for any of the tips to work.

Tip 1: Follow new people

You may already do this but make a concentrated effort to follow the movers & shakers in your industry. Take it a step further and follow the biggest fans of content for your niche. You get an e-mail every time you get a new follower that shows the user’s picture, bio & website link. You really need a fully fleshed out profile with picture, interesting bio and website link for this tactic to be effective.

Tip 2: Use Favorites

People take notice when you add their tweet to your favorites; it is a way of saying “hey, you are awesome!” This makes them more likely to check out your profile and click on the link to your website. This is also one of the most unused aspects of twitter so I think it gives the perception that you are a power user. You don’t want to over use the favorites button because then it loses the “you’re special” impact.

Tip 3: Send Direct Messages to New Followers

Whenever someone you followed follows you back; immediately send them a direct message thanking them. This will send them an e-mail or if using their phone a text message! Both you and the other person must be following each other to send a direct message. Occasionally someone important will follow you first such as an editor of a magazine or blog in your niche. I recommend following back & sending a direct reply ASAP when that happens. You could send an @reply to publicly thank them; but there is no e-mail or text message notice about replies. Now if you do NOT want to follow the person back, then send an @reply thanking them.

Tip 4: Tweet Past Content

You probably have content published from before you joined twitter and even if you don’t you will get new followers who have not seen your content from the past. You need to be very careful about doing this in a way that does not come across as spam. Once or twice a week is the max I recommend tweeting out content from your archives. If you ever get flak from your followers about doing this scale back the frequency.

Tip 5: Participate in Event #hashtags

You can find event hashtags for meet ups, tweet ups, and webinars so whenever you see an event with a designated hashtag – participate. It is a good idea to monitor the hashtag feed and interact with others on twitter at the event to get the maximum impact. They may not look at your site immediately but you will likely get new followers. At live events you can usually meet in person which is the best kind of networking even when you don’t get a site visitor out of it. Once the event ends follow up with participants by retweeting, replying or direct messaging them on twitter. You are more likely to get a visit to your site once the frenzy of the event passes.

I signed up for Twitter, 2 and a bit months ago and since them I have had excellent results from one particular strategy. I had tried to be totally ethical, I only follow people who I am interested in and don’t follow people who follow back automatically purely to increase my own followers.

Not only have I got a decent number of followers and traffic , from Twitter, I have also built a number of valuable relationships. But most of these followers and relationships have been built because I answer people’s questions on Twitter. Answering questions in any media, video, audio, face to face, etc is always appreciated.

In fact that is essentially to whole point of the internet. People are trying to find the answers to their questions, that’s why search engines are so successful. They make it so easy for people to find the answers to their questions. But people are turning more and more to social media sites for these answers.

On most of these sites people have taken advantage of these incredible marketing opportunities but on Twitter there is very little competition with this strategy.

Finding questions to answer

Go to http://search.twitter.com and type in the primary keyword for your website followed by a space and then a question mark like this:

Replace backlinks with your main keyword.

You will get a set of results, scan through the results and find the most interesting questions. Make sure the question being asked is a genuine question as many people will post a question as a promotional tweet. Click on reply and enter your answer.

Subscribe to the RSS feed for the page results and you will get updated with new questions daily.

Tips for successful answer:

• Remember that your answers will be seen by all your followers, so try and answer questions in a way that will help people that didn’t see the question
• Don’t overuse the strategy, answer at most 7 questions per day. Although if you only have a few followers you could go over that for the first week or so
• If you have written or found an article related to the question link to it
• Follow up a day later with a follow me request to the person whose question you answered

The key to any marketing strategy is to use it extensively and consistently. If you keep answering questions you will gradually see your followers grow. Then you can take advantage of these valuable followers by promoting your products and content.

1. Use “Please Retweet” – occasionally. When you have a post that needs RT, use the “Please Retweet” tag at the end. Statistically, this has shown to increase RT counts by a non-trivial amount. I suggest you use it most for those posts that aren’t RT friendly – such as non “How-Tos” or simple commentary pieces. The “Please Retweet” function will help provide a good boost.

2. When you notice your content being spread, jump in. Your link works just like a brand works – the more times it appears, the more likely someone is to read and/or retweet it. If you’re lucky enough to have someone tweet your stuff out before you promote it, and they’re in your area of expertise, jump in. Think about how you view tweet streams.. if you see a tweet mentioned multiple times, you’re bound to view it – if multiple people you follow think it’s good, it must be worth reading, right? So, even if it goes off your normal promotion times, fly in there and contribute to the stream of your link being spread.. it’s even more likely to get picked up again.

3. Schedule your tweets for another continent’s prime Twitter usage period. If you’re in the US, find the time where the U.K is most likely awake and ready to spread your content, and schedule it. I’m not a huge fan of automated tweets, but there’s nothing you can do here and it’s not that bad to promote your tweet one time. Similarly, if you’re in the UK, schedule some tweets to appeal to the US while you’re asleep. If you don’t, you’re missing out on a valuable market that still will read your stuff.

4. Find those who have engaged with your content more than once – and work with them. There has to be some way you can mutually benefit with someone who has worked or liked your stuff in the past. This means they respect you and they’re engaged with you, so they’re way more likely to link to you or be willing to cross-promote or something else of that nature. At very least, ask to guest post on their blog for some links/cross-promotion – you’ll get some extra love.

5. ReTweet when people mention you in a positive light – the “MeTweet”. When other people talk about you positively, retweet that information. This is seen as way less egotistical to the normal tweeter, but it still promotes your brand – so take advantage of every opportunity to do it. Some of the most popular people make a killing do this, where solely linking out from their own account eight times really wouldn’t have worked.

Have you hopped on the social media bandwagon yet ? It’s 2010 and here we are, immersed in social networking. People are practically addicted to checking their Twitter streams, updating Facebook, and the like. So what are you waiting for?

Social media and Twitter in particular is a must-do, especially as a marketer looking to bring traffic to your site. The truth of the matter is millions of users are online everyday telling us what they’re up to. As a marketer it’s almost your responsibility to get active.

Here’s one way to think about it: social media is basically one big conversation that is going 24/7/365. Twitter is the best example of this because EVERYTHING is updated in real time. Just imagine it as a huge networking event – who has the most success in these situations? The people who get active.

To use Twitter, and all social media, to effectively get more traffic to your site, you just need to do one simple thing: be able to listen and communicate with manners in mind. Oh wait, that’s two things….but I digress.

Listen
Most people who use Twitter start out by making a fundamental mistake – they forget they are participating in a global conversation and only participate online in a self serving format. That’s so wrong! While you might find some and I only mean a small amount, of success with this method, you’ll be better off if you listen first to your audience and then develop your messaging strategy.

The below example will not work:

“tweet 1: Hi I’m John I had pizza for breakfast mm so good have you bought my ebook yet….
tweet 2: definitely check out my new blog post omg did you see Jersey Shore last night….
tweet 3: love this product you should buy it now and use my affiliate link please blogged this….”

Simple Manners
The above example is an extreme, but you get the point. Always being self serving isn’t a good idea. What we can also learn from the above is that simple manners can get you far.

A few examples are:

• Don’t be one way with your messaging, help a follower out and RT their stuff.
• Provide valuable content to your followers that naturally engage them.
• Ask questions, and answer questions.
• Put your business branding cap on: don’t be too controversial.
• Avoid: religion, money, and politics.
• Reply to someone who sends you a message whether it be DM or @reply. Now…if it’s spam, no need to response of course.

A Little More Advice
• Put a link to your blog in your bio.
• Add Twitter plugins to your blog.
• Follow back. This may be one piece of advice that others won’t give you, but I always follow back the users who follow me. Again, if they’re spam: no need to reciprocate a follow.
• Make EVERY message you send out short enough for a RT. You’re given 140 characters but if someone tries to RT your message will be cut off. Stay around 100-120 characters in each tweet.
• Be complete in your sentences
• Use short URLs: bit.ly is great. Use it. Love it. Live it.
• Monitor your account on a regular basis. Look to tools like Hootsuite (who just recently got a revamp) or Tweetdeck to help you organize. If you decide to delete all tweets due to tweet spam check out Twitwipe

Remember: Contribute valuable content, connect with other users on a very personal level, and share others information through the use of a RT. These are the keys to using twitter to bring traffic to your blog. Simple conversational etiquette is all it takes to make you stand out!
