Facebook crosses 300 million active users

by ZK on September 20, 2009

Facebook

Facebook recently announced that it crossed 300 million monthly active users across the globe and as you know thats roughly the population of US. Facebook added about 50 million users in 75 days, that’s about 670,000 users per day. In mid july it announced that it had reached 250 million users. Facebook has also turned cash positive as of last quater.

In the recent Facebook blog post, CEO Mark Zuckerberg says that they hoped to be cash positive sometime next year but were happy to have made enough to cover their operating expenses starting last quarter.

Almost a year ago many were speculating if Facebook will ever turn cash positive, the recent blog post says Facebook is now “free cash flow positive” - the term “free cash flow” means the amount of cash that a company generates after budgeting costs required to maintain and expand itself.

Facebook’s global audience has doubled since the beginning of the year, adding 150 million new users since January. More than 70% of Facebook’s users reside outside of US and as of today the company reports 85 million active American users.

Facebook’s board members say that it would do $500 million in revenues in 2009, up from an estimated $280 – $300 million in 2008.

If they estimate earnings of $500 million, it was a good thing that Mark turned down the $1.6 Billion dollar offer from Yahoo not too long ago.

Till then,

Jean

I noticed alot of comments and posts which were very obviously anti-Obama.Obviously Facebook is seen as a medium for airing public opinion to a very large audience without too many constraints.I see why its overtook Myspace in terms of membership figures.Thank you

@Kam, in my opinion facebook took over the market share of web 2.0 websites because it was better and still is better than the competition. Facebook came out with a better concept than compared to myspace.

Till then,

Jean

In fact, I’ve never used Myspace before, perhaps not much people talked about it and I didn’t want to bother about that. I used Friendster before switching to Facebook, I love Facebook because there are many interesting games over there. :D

As a facebook member, I’m happy to hear that it has reached 300 million users worldwide will continue to grow it’s members in the coming months. With its user friendly features there’s no doubt facebook will rise above it’s competitors.

Jacques @ Web Design September 21, 2009 at 8:45 am

That is phenomenal growth. 50 million new subscribers in 75 days is just incredible statistics. The things is that there are still so many more peopel that haven’t joined up! It is quite incredible. Does anybody want to hazard a guess as to how long it will take to get to 350 million users? The facebook servers must be catching huge strain!

matt@free acai berry September 21, 2009 at 3:55 pm

“The facebook servers must be catching huge strain!”

They definitely need to upgrade and better balance the load among the servers. I am forever getting connection issues and forget about playing MobWars or other games.

Let’s face it Matt, connecting to FaceBook can be a very slow and frustrating process, and loads of people are forever complaining about the slow speeds. Does anybody know exactly where their server farm(s?) is located and how big it actually is?

Chuggin@bunn coffee maker parts September 22, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Damn! That is a serious amount of users! No wonder because even my dad is on there. I still think that Facebook should buy out Twitter so that Twitter could actually have a faster servers and make some money.

Facebook grows really fast in short period, it even beats Friendster. I registered in Facebook few months ago, I’ve yet to market my blog in facebook, but I played a lot of games in Facebook. :D

Dataflurry September 23, 2009 at 10:41 am

That’s all? Just 300,000,000? Man, they need to start turning it up a notch. : -) just joking

Does anyone know the stats of Myspace? I think Myspace is more attractive to the young generation (teens)

Thanks for The Information. No wonder Facebook reach top 3 on Alexa Ranking. I also ever read some information if facebook still negative cashflow. So finally now they already have positive cashflow. However, I think twitter still in negative cashflow.

I can’t believe that Facebook is only now becoming cash positive! With so many users, I would have thought they would have been cash positive a long time ago. It just seems like a big risk to me, to set out creating such a large social networking site, with no hope of making a profit unless you get that many users!

Vu Condo Hotels October 7, 2009 at 5:27 am

Its glad to hear that Facebook has announced that it crossed 300 million monthly active users. As,Facebook has also turned cash positive as of last quater.Hope you increase more revenues in 2009.Good Luck…….

Mel@Park Shore real estate October 14, 2009 at 12:30 am

Facebook and Twitter, both are growing rapidly and it identifies how much people are turning to these social networks. I don’t like Facebook much apart from the fact that they don’t allow you to change your name into any nickname etc so any old mate can find you out on Facebook. Some of my old friends have found me through Facebook again so it makes you feel very good. But one should not cross the limit :) Know where your limits are.
