Larry Page back in May made it very clear that Twitter had set the trend for real time searches The fact that Google was loosing sleep over Twitters exponential growth made it very clear that it was time for The Big G to get back to the drawing desk to and changes its algorithm to feature real time searches in its results.

Google today announced that it will roll out a new real time based search results interface. The new features will be rolling out in the next few days and will be available globally in English. You can try them out today by visiting Google Trends and clicking on a “hot topic,” which in most cases will bring you to a search results page with the new real-time feature.

Have a first look at Google’s real-time search:

If you see the search results in the video above you’ll notice that real time searches take up almost 4 – 5 lines of the page. This will impact the search results that were at the bottom of page one. If your search result was at number 9 or 10 on the first page, you’ll find that its has now moved to page two or maybe even out of the search results.

According to the Google Blog , “Our real-time search features are based on more than a dozen new search technologies that enable us to monitor more than a billion documents and process hundreds of millions of real-time changes each day. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our new partners that we’re announcing today : Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca — along with Twitter, which we announced a few weeks ago”

With the new launch Google clearly has indicated that relevancy and real time searches is the way forward for Google’s future search technology and if you are not present on media that impacts real time searches you may not be featured in the top results.

Twitter’s exponential growth has had big brother Google lose sleep over its inability to index real time search results. Its not only the big wigs at Google who are worried about Twitters growth but also its founder Larry Page is worried about Google’s inability on real time searches. No wonder it pitched hard to buy Twitter.

What does Larry Page Think about Twitter ?
“I have always thought we needed to index the web every second to allow real time search. At first, my team laughed and did not believe me. Now they know they have to do it. Not everybody needs sub-second indexing but people are getting pretty excited about realtime.”

Google has just posted the full video of Larry Page comments on Twitter which you can find at 19:08 (this link will take you directly to these comments) , the transcript of the conversation is below :

Can you comment on the growth of Twitter and Google plans to integrate real time?

“people really want to stuff real time and they (twitter) have done a really good job about. We have done a relatively poor job of doing things that work on a per second basis. I have been telling our search team that they need to search on a per second basis. They laughed at me and said it’s ok it’s just a few minutes old.

I said “no” it needs to be every second. Now I think they understand that. I think we will do a better job at some of those things now that we have these examples. It does take time to really integrate information. If you really want up to the second information it is not going to be as good as if you wait up to a couple of minutes. That’s an important aspect of what’s going on, you need to make people get sense of things. I am not sure everybody needs to see stuff every second, I am not sure that’s the right model either.”
