Twitter races past Digg, NYTimes and LinkedIn with 32 million visitors in April

by ZK on May 21, 2009

Twitter Growth

ComScore just released its worldwide numbers for April 2009 on top social media sites and their traffic details. As per the above chart and web traffic numbers the little guy named Twitter is no more the little guy on the internet.

Twitter has been experiencing exponential growth since the last three months, from 10 million monthly unique visitors wordwide to it’s site in Feb 2009 it raced to 32 million in April 2009, up from 19 million in March 2009. As per the report Twitter’s US visitors alone reached 17 million in April 2009.

What does this exponential growth mean for big and establish players on the web ?

Twitter has just passed Digg (23 million), NYTimes.com (17.5 million) and LinkedIn (16 million) in monthly unique visitors, as counted by comScore. And comScore only measures the number of people who visit Twitter’s Website, not the millions more who send and read tweets via their phones, desktop apps, or other Websites.

Twitter.com is also now bigger than Bebo and Freindster, who is it going to surpass in the coming months ?

If Twitter can keep adding 10 million global visitors a month, it will easily pass 50 million this summer and 100 million by the end of the year.

It will take a while before Twitter gets as big as Facebook, as per comscore Facebook has 300 million unique visitors in April 2009, which makes Twitter about 1/10 th the size of Facebook.

What is important here is not the size but the potential of Twitter as an online marketing tool compared to Facebook. Twitter has proved that its a great online sales channel.

I’d say the others have little to fear. The good news for them is the massive difference in usage; they all have their uniqueness in way that twitter isn’t really a “replacement”.

It’s not like Facebook and Myspace which is basically the same site. lol

And the “social media” bubble grows even bigger. I hope the folks at Google have learned their lesson from YouTube and keep their checkbooks closed on Twitter.

Twitter is going to slow down pretty soon here.

By the end of summer, I suspect it will cool off.

Wow! I’m sure the Twitter team is really proud of this achievement! Looks like Twitter is really here to stay, contrary to what other people are saying. This is proof of Twitter’s growth and potential. 32 million unique visitors, oh my! That’s roughly around 43000 unique hits in an hour for the whole month! Phew!

I love twitter. The main reason is that it makes communication quick by limiting it to 140 characters. This is great for people who don’t like to type much.

How quickly they grow. Remember when Twitter was just a little pipsqueek, with less than 10 million monthly unique visitors to its site worldwide? That was back in February, 2009. Fast-forward to April, and Twitter’s U.S. visitors alone reached 17 million. Now comScore has released its worldwide numbers and it estimates Twitter’s global unique visitors in April, 2009 was a whopping 32 million, up from 19 million in March, 2009…

Twitter really is going strong and with the promotion of it from so many celebrities and the fact that a tweet is short to write it can be a fun way to communicate or get all the news from your favorite celebs. Now that it can be linked to search engine optimisation for sites and used in combination with a lot of business marketing Twitter has become a very powerful medium. It’s not what Facebook is, that is different in a lot of ways, but it is a fun and fast way to communicate. It would be awesome to get that many unique visits a month for many of us and yet it is probably considered low for many popular sites. It brings back the clarification about how many people use the internet each day across the world. Amazing.
