If you’ ve be active on Twitter for about 3 – 4 months, you would have realise that Twitter limits its following to 2000 people. I realised this yesterday when my following went beyond 2000 thanks to the new users from the Twitter Contest
Last night when I clicked to follow my 2001 st Twitter user I got a message that said, “You are unable to follow more people, please read about the following limits.” This clearly states that you can only follow a limited number of people, there is also a ratio as to how many people follow you.
Here is what you need to be aware of to ensure your follower and following limits on Twitter.
- 1000 total updates per day, on any and all devises ( web , mobile, API etc )
- 1000 total direct messages per day on any and all devises.
- 100 API requests per hour.
There is also a limit on the number of people you can follow. The number is different for everybody, and is based on a ratio that changes as the account changes. If you hit a following limit, you must balance your follower / following ratio in order to follow more people. You can’t follow 40,000 people if only 40 people follow you.
On digging further I figured that you cannot follow more than 2000 till you have 2000 followers, when you cross 2000 followers Twitter allows you to follow more. This limit has been enforced to reduce internet junkies that just keep following people and spam bot to a great extent.
Here is what you need to do when your Twitter Following reaches 2000
- Remove people from your following list that don’t follow you, you don’t want to follow people who don’t follow you. Just click on the following link, anyone you don’t see a link to direct message is safe to loose. You may also want to unfollow people who don’t have anything interesting to say on Twitter.
- Build your list of Twitter Followers to 2000, once you reach 2000 Twitter Followers you can add more Twitter Following to your profile.
One of the activities that you can do to increase your Twitter Followers is run a contest. I am presently running a Twitter contest to increase my Followers and add user interactivity and participation on Twitter.

While most of us are concentrating on increasing our twitter followers, we tend not to notice these restrictions. Thanks not just for reminding but for offering solutions.

This was bound to happen as people have started to use twitter as spam. Now people will start unfollowing if they found someone interesting. So followers graph will be up and down in coming days … lollz

This limit has been in effect since August 2008, if you had a high Twitter following before August your account would have been spared of the limitation.
OR
If Twitter thinks you have a good following to followers ratio then they would have not imposed this limit on your account

Wow, I had no idea that there was a following/follower limit on Twitter. I am very new to Twitter and have not done a lot to gain more followers, but I will have to keep this in mind. Maybe someday I will get up to 2000 and need to worry about it
I do think its a good policy though, I am sure that does help keep some spammers away – and then I’ve also heard about followers who follow people to get them to follow them and then stop following…yeesh.

There is still no limit on how many people can follow you. And some people (like Scoble, who follows 21,000 people), may be grandfathered in. For normal humans, though, there is really no need to follow more than a few hundred people.
It will be a little while before I get 2000 people following me on twitters.Its quite an achievement . Good work !

Seems like an awful lot to follow surely their are alot in that 2000 you don’t need to be following so go through them and stop following the ones who are not friends or don’t offer value.

There have been recent changes to help cut down on spam that’s resulting in users being unable to follow people past a certain point. It sounds like this cutoff point varies by user.
I follow 43 people and my “recent” list is in constant motion. With 2,000 it would be useless. But that’s me. : )

It’s easy to get too involved in twitter at first and start following countless people you really have no interest of following. after a month or two it’s always a good idea to clean the list a little.

I was surprised when I reached that 2000 limit yesterday. Thanks for the tip about checking out the people that you were following and remove those that were not following you back. This worked allowing me to follow some more people who were following me. I’ll have to do this each time until I get my 2000 followers. I’m only a few hundred off.

Unfollowing those who haven’t followed me works for me. Also unfollowing spammers and just realizing it just takes time. I thought it was taking forever to get followers but now I have a lot and it seems like it took no time. Just follow a few hundred people every day and many will follow you back. Then go in once a week and unfollow people who are not following you.
