My 10 Favorite Backlink Sources…SEO Magic!

Backlink Tips

If you’ve spent much time creating an internet business, I’m sure you have heard about search engine traffic.  It is one of the most beneficial traffic sources available.  The viewers are targeted and once you have the rankings, they come on autopilot for a very long time.  One way to create a high income online business is focusing on search engine traffic alone.

The question comes down to getting these top rankings in the search engines.  A huge factor in determining who gets the rankings for particular keywords is the amount of links and the quality of those links that are pointing to a given site.  These links are what we call backlinks.  Search engines like Google look at these backlinks almost like votes for your site.  The more votes, the better your site appears.

This shouldn’t be anything new to anyone who has spent even a little bit of time building an internet business.  Creating a consistent backlinking plan is going to be key for getting those top rankings.  The great news for you is there are thousands of places you can get backlinks back to your site.

Take a look at my favorite 10 backlink sources:

1.  Article Directories

Article marketing is how I started my internet business.  I spent a lot of my early days writing articles and submitting them to the best directories around.  I quickly learned two things from this.  Article marketing is a great source of traffic from the directory viewers, and article marketing offers good backlinks towards your site.  My favorite directories are EZA, GoArticles, Buzzle, iSnare, and HubPages.

2.  Video Directories

YouTube has become a major search engine itself.  People use YouTube to find information just as they would search through Google.  If you start video marketing, you will quickly learn that this is another great source of both traffic and backlinks.  A viral video could cause backlinks to be created for you in thousands of places around the web.

3.  PDF Directories

Not many people take advantage of this backlink source, but it is another great one.  If you are partaking in article marketing already, there is no reason you can’t submit the content to PDF directories.  These platforms include places like Scribd and DocStoc.  Once again, this is both a traffic source and a backlink source.

4.  Forums

Forums have a great way of generating high Page Rank .  Getting backlinks from these sources can do wonders for your search engine rankings.  This is especially true if you are going after low competition keywords.  You can easily add links back to your site from the forum signatures and the forum profile page.  Double the benefits from forums by interacting with the readers.

5.  Blogs

Blog commenting is an easy way to add lots of relevant links back to your site.  Doing a quick search in google for “keyword” + blog will return lots and lots of potential backlinks.  Interacting with bloggers in a related market opens up the opportunity for joint ventures as well.

6.  RSS Feeds

These backlinks aren’t going to pull much weight especially compared to the high page rank forums or blogs.  They will add those low power links to your site on a consistent basis though.  Every time you submit a blog post, your RSS feed will send out those backlinks.  The consistent backlinks from these sources allow your site to appear more natural as well.

7.  Social Bookmarks

These backlinks are much like the RSS feed links.  They don’t pull much weight, but they help generate lots of backlinks.  You can easily send your newly published post to 50 social bookmarking sites like Digg, Delicious, Reddit, etc with the free tool Onlywire or Social Marker.

8.  Web 2.0 Sites

These are sites like Squidoo, WetPaint, and Blogger.  They allow you to create blogs in any subject you wish.  The key to building power Web 2.0 backlinks is by publishing compliment content towards your main website.  These can become a very powerful backlink source as well as traffic generator.

9.  Website Directories

There are tons and tons of website directories available.  The big dog would have to be the DMOZ.  Getting your site in this directory will pull a lot of weight for your site getting high rankings.  Don’t stop there though.  This process is only a one time thing.  There is no reason you shouldn’t be submitting your url to all of these directories for quick backlinks.

10.  Press Releases

Press releases are killer for backlinks.  You can easily get a quality news article ranked right away in Google News which would lead to thousands of backlinks to your site very quickly.  Submitting 2 press releases per month to at least 10 directories is ideal for building lots and lots of links fast.

If you really want search engine rankings, you should use a combination of the above backlink sources.  It never hurts to have a diversified portfolio.  The more backlinks towards your site the better.  Don’t forget to mix up the amount of high quality links (high PR sites) and low quality (RSS Feeds) so your site has a natural backlinking look.

I haven’t tried yet press releases but I think it’s too good option to get quality backlinks. I may try it in near future. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Press releases are one of the most powerful backlink methods you will find. You don’t hear much about them in the open because they are tough to take full advantage of.

You can literally see thousands of backlinks and viewers from 1 press release when the right site picks up your story. I submit 1 per month at minimum.

Oh, no doubt, these are great traffic and backlink sources. I have yet to seriously try most of them especially video sites, though. 🙂

Travis Petelle April 5, 2011 - 10:26 am

Hey Jasmine,

Video sites are awesome. The great thing about videos is they are easy and lots of fun to make. Any content that you have in text form can easily be turned into a video. Use the text of your article as your script and create a power point slide for graphics. They work very nicely.

I am using blog comment, forum posting and press release to make backlinks for mine.

Alex April 4, 2011 - 4:58 pm

Hey Travis, You kind of covered all the bases, I also heard about PDF or ebooks directories, but I never understood how it works, do you get the link from the ebook or do you get to write a description about your ebook?

Also, an other method to get links is to ask other webmaster for a link exchange..

Travis Petelle April 5, 2011 - 10:28 am

Hey Alex,

The links you get from PDF directories will completely depend on the directory. Some of them will post the pdf straight to their site…so the links within the pdf will be counted as backlinks. Others will allow readers to download the pdf’s…this doesn’t give much backlinks, but it does give you traffic. So, it’s kind of a win win thing. It takes 5 seconds to turn your articles into PDF files too.

Link exchanges are definitely a great way for backlinks too.

Link Building is like a Life Blood of a website
search gives the people what they want

Great advice on the PDF directories, they really are a great source of backlinks, traffic and very often forgotten. Great advice.

Travis Petelle April 6, 2011 - 11:29 am

They are definitely forgotten…it’s so easy to turn your content into PDFs too. It’s silly not to use them.

These are all great ways to get links. One more suggestion is to create local profiles in the search engines (Google Places/Maps, Google Local, Yahoo Local etc.). As you mentioned, it’s important to have a diversified approach to your link building.

Travis Petelle April 6, 2011 - 2:45 pm

Hey Nick,

That’s a great suggestion. This is especially a good idea when you are getting ranked for local mom and pop shops…”nashville dentist” for example.

Does this really deliver and works.I have tried so many things, and all I end up got discounted from big “G”?? Please share your experience, not thoughts or someone else experience, real experience??? thx in advance

Travis Petelle April 6, 2011 - 2:46 pm

Deliver quality content and don’t over do it. That’s the keys to giving Google what they want. You won’t have a problem from that point on. It’s all about consistency when it comes to backlinks.

I agree with pdf directories, I signed up with docstoc and it was every bit as effective as your article directors, good advice, because it s not on a lot of internet marketers or bloggers agenda.

ok thanks but i do also blog commenting and it’s really fun, enjoy and learning reading good article..!!!

Travis Petelle April 9, 2011 - 12:37 pm

You’re right. Article directories backlinks are not as powerful as they used to be, but that’s using article directories alone. Write a good article on EZA that links to your website….then write a good article on Squidoo and link that to the EZA article. Those are powerful backlinks to throw in there. The link juice transfer is what causes it to be good.

You have to diversify and use all of the backlink methods.

I have used most of them but not the video sites just because of time involved in making videos but looks like I have to get into this as well

Lee Ka Hoong April 18, 2011 - 8:38 am

Hey Travis, what you list here is very effective! But seems that you miss out “Guest Posting”? This is the method that I found very useful not only to build one way quality backlink, but targeted traffic and genuine audience. Of course, you should actually build backlinks from several sources to obtain better result.

Great list Travis!

Regards,
Lee

Travis Petelle April 18, 2011 - 10:58 am

Hey Lee Ka Hoong,

I left out guest posts because you should never be guest posting for backlinks. That would be an incredible waste of time. For traffic purposes, that’s a different story. I regularly use guest posting to drive continual traffic to my sites.

Good mention though. People should definitely be using guest posts!
