Tips to create a Squidoo lens and rank high on Google

by ZK on January 28, 2009

How to create a squidoo lens Squidoo has been on of the fastest growing sites on the internet, it’s a great site not only for building backlinks but also for generating traffic. Google loves Squidoo, if you have a lens on Squidoo it will index the lens much faster and quick than your new blog or site. This will help the lens get a hight SERP and will translate into traffic for your site. If used strategically squidoo can generate very targetted users without much effort.

I built a Squidoo lens for this Internet Marketing Blog with the help of Kelly Stone’s Squidoo Queen and it already ranks at 413 out of 22,887 lenses on SEO in less than a week.

Here are some tips that will help you achieve a good rank on Squidoo and get you traffic :

- Content is king :
Squidoo = Content and that’s the reason why Google loves Squidoo. Ensure you have unique content that related to the theme of your site or the product that you are marketing. Content will drives uses to click on your links in the Squidoo article.

- Use URL related to your content :
Choose a squidoo url that relates to the theme of your lens or keywords that relate to your website. I ve used keywords Internet Marketing and Web Traffic for my Squidoo lens . Use keywords that you want to rank on Google.

- Use the indroduction module
Use the introduction to let people know the content for your site , make it appealing and interesting for people to click and go to your lens

- Use Lensroll
Just like you have a blogroll for your blog , each Squidoo lens account has a lens roll where you can feature all your Squidoo lenses. This help in cross promotion of your lens and links.

- Squidoo Lens Submission :

Once you have a lens you can submit the same to a Squidoo Lens Submission sites like lensroll.com , squidom.com, squoogle.com

- Bookmark your lens :

Bookmarking will make your lens go viral and get you a larger base in a short period of time. Bookmark your post to top 10 social bookmarketing sites like digg.com, stumbleupon.com, delicious.com, reddit.com

- Frequent updation :
Its important to keep your lens fresh, Google give importance to fresh content, even if you dont have any content to add ensure that you login and edit your tags or images. This gives a signal to Google bot that you have an active lens. Frequent updation will also tell Squidoo that you have a fresh lens.

- Submission to article directories :
Submit your lens to atleast to 5 – 6 article directories ie. ezinearticles.com, articlebase.com, buzzle.com, goarticles.com, searchwrap.com, articlesnatch.com

- Add keywords :
On the Stats page when you click on traffic, you will see some keywords. Some of them are keywords with “+” in front of them. These are keywords which people use to reach to your lens but are not a part of your lens keyword list. Add these keywords by clicking on “+”

Have a look at the lens for this Internet Marketing Blog on Squidoo built with Squidoo Queen . It ranks 413 out of 22,887 lenses on SEO. The lens was build a week ago. Squidoo can be a very powerful source of traffic if you know how to create a lens and rank it high.

I tried squidoo and hubpages (very similar), but I still find best is to write original content on own websites, rather than giving it to 3rd party websites.

Nice list. We have a few hundred Squidoo lenses and what you say is spot on. One thing I’ve noticed lately is the emphasis Squidoo is placing on putting nofollow tags on the internal linking structure. It used to be where the usernames and lensrolled lenses were dofollow, but now they are not. At least I’ve observed that on many lenses.

I used to see Squidoo Lenses constantly on the front page of my Google searches. I don’t see this at all anymore. Perhaps I am just mistaken. Of course I will still give Squidoo a try. If you say that it will help my blog I would do it.

If you told me sucking on the tailpipe of a car would help my blog I would do it…

The White,
Search ‘west pasco wa church’ or ‘richland wa recycling’ to find a few examples of lenses we have ranking in Google. Squidoo lenses are a great source of traffic, especially longtail searches. Also, images hosted on Squidoo do very well in image searches. For example, search ‘save the children’ in Google’s image search. You can get really creative with marketing that involves images (i.e., poster sales, etc.). Oh, I hear sucking on a tail pipe works. :)

I searched for those phrases in Google and did in fact find the lenses on the first page. The one difference that I saw between your lens and lenses that I have seen previously is the amount of content.

Most lenses that used to get ranked in Google had maybe a page of content, while your had a ton. Perhaps Google is being much more harsh in rankings for those that have less content. Anyways good job with the lenses, they are obviously doing well for you. Perhaps one day I will try to cook up a lense, I just don’t know if I woudl have the patience to create such a huge amount of content. That looked like a months worth of posts for me!

I’ve yet to try this service. I wanted to wait to make sure it would still be around before I invested myself in it. Everytime a killer app comes along one of two things happen: it dies or spammers kill it.

I’m going to look into this tomorrow.

I find blogging one of the good ways of internet marketing. I have received a small number of visitors on my site especially from the sites where I commented their blogs.

Carla March 11, 2009 at 11:41 am

I have had a lens for several months, but still struggle with attracting traffic. I now realize that I have to add more content to it (like as I blog).

I admit, I dont really care for it nearly enough. I work on my blog daily but my Squidoo lens maybe 2-3 times a month. :-/

Hi Carla,

Squidoo Lens will give you a quality back link which will help your site ranking on Google.

The best is to add fresh content regularly, if you are not able to do so I recommend you to log into your Squidoo Account once every week and tweak the existing content to ensure Google crawls it regularly.

I am sure in coming days Squidoo will get more and more better. Recent updates in policy is an example of that. They are working hard to manage it in a proper manner and removing spam and junk kind of lenses.

These kind of practices of Squidoo will certainly give benefit to them in coming days.

I would recommend u to get as much traffic as u can. The more traffic the more money u will earn. Add ur lens URL to all major search engines including Google & Yahoo. Also, become a fan member with people and WRITE A LOT! U need a lot more lenses than just one.

Excellent tips,

These will really get people ranking. But to ensure you get even more link juice from more authority sites, create profiles in other high ranking web 2.0 properties like Hupages, Wetpaint, Zimbio, LinkedIn and link your content (via keyword anchor text) to your Squidoo page. This will ensure you’re lens will rocket up the rankings!

I hope this helps,

Neil

I already created some squidoo lense for my site and ranked high within a month and got PR of 3. For getting this, you have to put a unique content and need to use most modules whether it would be in the form of text, images, videos or sound!!..your lens definately ranked!

Mini cooper for sale October 13, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Hi,

can you explain to me what the rank means in Squidoo ?

Do one get better ranking by getting people to press the “thumbs up” button?

Does having better ranking in Squidoo mean you get better rank in Google for that lense?

Thanks

buy p90x October 13, 2010 at 3:51 pm

I think getting the thumbs up be a number of visitors should help your rating to climb. I have a better understanding of hubpages personally. I think it is important to add a decent amount of modules to be a more “complete” Squidoo lens.
